Convenor's Invitation

On behalf of the Conference Organising Committee, it is my pleasure to invite you to attend the inaugural spatial@gov Conference being held in Canberra on 15 and 16 June 2009.

The Conference program has an impressive line-up of presenters covering a wide range of themes and topics.

This new event addresses the rapidly increasing demand for information on how spatial capabilities can improve the ability of governments at all levels to inform their policy development, enhance service delivery and gain efficiencies in internal business processes. The presentations will provide a wide range of examples of how the concept of ‘place’ has been used to improve business processes.

Experts will present on topical themes including water, social inclusion, indigenous culture and local government. Our international presenters will describe
relevant activities in other countries including the remote sensing programs operating in China and the spatial activities of the New Zealand Government.

Australian presenters will describe how spatial tools have supported the response to the Victorian bushfires through tactical and operational mapping, and how national water concerns are being addressed through the application of world leading spatial capabilities. You will hear how spatial technologies are being applied to assist in better understanding indigenous mobility leading to improved service delivery.

Many examples of new and innovative spatial applications leveraging the concept of ‘place’ that is associated with many government activities will assist Delegates to understand how they can provide benefits within their own agencies. Attendance by the commercial sector will assist them through a greater appreciation of how governments are applying spatial resources to address national, regional and local issues.

spatial@gov - organised by a number of key organisations across the Australian spatial community - aims to raise awareness of the significant benefits to be gained by applying spatial resources to the business of government.
