Acceleration: update on the ICSM Roads Working Group's efforts to achieve a consistent road data model for Australasia

  • The Intergovernmental Committee on Surveying & Mapping's Roads Working Group (RWG) was formed in May 2005 in recognition of the need to establish and maintain a nationally consistent approach to capturing roads information. Roads are an important dataset for emergency management, government planning, transport safety, addressing and recreational applications, and the RWG's goal is to resolve inconsistencies between various government and private providers of roads data to reduce the duplication and effort required to maintain roads datasets for these purposes.
In the last 18 months the RWG has developed recommendations on improving road classification and commenced the development of a data model which will (a) facilitate exchange of roads data and (b) improve the currency and structure of fundamental roads data provided by government. This has been in consultation with government and industry users and providers. This paper presents those recommendations and offers an opportunity for the wider community to contribute to and comment on the RWG's work.
