Issues with access to government spatial information
This presentation will briefly cover the process of creating a commercial traffic service based on significant use of government data including geo spatial data and will then focus on the many issues we have had in building a commercial service where a key input has been government spatial and related data.
Intelematics provides a real time traffic information service using the International standard 'TMC" & 'RDS' for digital encoding and broadcast of traffic & safety content. The service, known as Suna Traffic Channel, operates in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane/Gold Coast, and will soon launch in Adelaide, Perth and Canberra. The service has as a key input raw data from the state road authorities and has a significant geo spatial component. The data is collected from loop sensors in every lane on every road with a signalised intersection, as well as from freeway loops and CCTV cameras. The exact location of these collection points is critical to the building of our geographic traffic model.
The issues faced in creating the commercial service including technical - relating to both data access, technical formats and geographic accuracy will be presented as well as other key issues associated with legal and commercial aspects.
